Measures current: The primary function is to quantify the rate of flow of electric charge, which is the current.

Unit of measurement: Readings are typically displayed in amperes (A), milliamperes (mA), or microamperes (µA).

Measures AC and DC: Ammeters are available in types that measure direct current (DC), alternating current (AC), or both, depending on their design (e.g., moving coil for DC only, moving iron for both). 

Series connection: An ammeter must always be connected in series with the component or circuit where the current is being measured. This ensures that all the current flows through the ammeter itself.

Low resistance: An ideal ammeter has zero internal resistance to avoid altering the circuit’s total resistance and the current being measured. Practical ammeters have very low resistance, minimizing their impact on the circuit.
